Batucuda Sound Machine – Rhythm and Rhyme

Rhythm and Rhyme is the essence of summer bottled onto a compact disc – a wild and rampant musical flavour explosion thrown together by some of NZ’s most talented world-musicians. Well ‘some’ is a bit of an understatement, BSM is a monumental 12-piece and on their debut they let loose with horns, drums, guitar, bass, Latin percussion, rap and liquid smooth keys. BSM’s musical melting pot bursts with energy, spanning across afro-beat, samba, reggae, soul, dub, funk and hip-hop.

QOTSA

The relentlessness of QOTSA’s Songs for the Deaf was confronting when it was released in 2002 and remarkably a stream of second rate imitators have been unable to blunt the pleasure of hearing a band sit on a simple riff and groove and drive right through. Do It Again remains a masterpiece of simple intensity, no let up, no tension relieving frivolity. QOTSA were a gateway drug to real metal for many and this album is aging so well it may hook a few more punters for the dark side yet.
